How Are We Supposed to Interact With Angels?

There are many books and websites being published which will tell you how to contact your specific angel. They tell you that you have your own angel assigned to you. These books and websites lead you to believe that you should enter into a prayerful relationship with your angel and work with your angel to gain health, wealth, and generally prosper in your life.

I could find no evidence in scripture that leads me to believe that there is a particular angel assigned to each person for their lifetime. Angels are all around to do God’s bidding, and sometimes His bidding is to look after us, as we can see in Psalm 91:11, 12. “He has put his angels in charge of you to watch over you wherever you go. They will catch you in their hands so that you will not hit your foot on a rock.” (NCV)

Note that this passage does not say that He has put AN angel in charge of you. When we look at specific accounts of angels appearing to people in the bible, we see that they come, they perform their task as assigned by God, and then they leave. When Gabriel delivered the news to Mary that she was to be the mother of the Savior, he didn't hang around to make sure everything would be okay and answer all her questions. He delivered the news and went on to take care of his other duties.

In another example in the book of Acts, Peter is in prison and an angel comes to him to free him and then leaves just as suddenly. In Acts 12: 8-10

Then the angel said to him, "Put on your clothes and sandals." And Peter did so. "Wrap your cloak around you and follow me," the angel told him. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him. (NIV)

Angels are not here to do our bidding. Therefore we are not to interact with them. We are not to pray to them, nor try to contact them directly. If they contact us, then that is the will of God. If we feel the need for an angel’s protection or comfort, we can ask God to send an angel to us. If we know of someone in need, we can ask God to send that person one of His mighty angels to protect, guard or comfort that person in their time of need.

Even the angels, themselves, tell us in the bible that we are not to pray to them, that they are not worthy of adoration, but that we are to focus our prayer and attention on the Lord, just as they do. In Revelations, John admits to bowing down to the angel that revealed the end days to him and he tells us of the angel’s response. Revelation 22:8, 9

I, John am the one who heard and saw these things. When I heard and saw them, I bowed down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed these things to me. But the angel said to me, “Do not worship me! I am a servant like you, your brothers the prophets, and all those who obey the words in this book. Worship God!” (NCV)

That makes a pretty clear statement about how we are to interact with angels – or how we are not to interact with angels. They want us to place our focus on God. They do God’s bidding. If that brings them into contact with us human’s then that is God’s will, but we are to place our focus on the Lord.
